Beauty treatments are constantly evolving, and every time you go to a salon or spa, there seems to be yet another new trend to try. Red light therapy (RLT) is gaining popularity due to the claims that it reduces fine lines and wrinkles.

There are a range of devices available for red light therapy treatments, from panels, masks and even wands. In-salon treatments are a way to indulge in some self-care, but there are also plenty of ways to complete these treatments at home.

Whether done in a salon or at home, red light therapy is a quick and effective treatment that people can enjoy with no downtime.

What is red light therapy?

Red light therapy is a non-invasive treatment in which red and near-infrared light is absorbed by the top layer of the skin. It is performed in small time increments (usually 30 minutes or less), during which the light penetrates the cells to promote healing and increase growth factor production.

RLT is non-thermal, so produces no heat while undergoing the treatment. It claims to have benefits such as reducing fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation and rough, textured skin. It may also help stimulate collagen production.

Does red light therapy work?

The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that red and infrared light devices can “augment tissue repair and promote regeneration and skin rejuvenation”. It also found that treatment increased the hyaluronic acid, collagen protein and elastin protein in the skin.

Research has found that RLT may also assist in healing and regenerating muscle tissue when delivered before and after exercise.

You may find that RLT needs ongoing sessions to be effective. This can be completed in a salon or at home. Generally, if performing the treatment at home, you will need more frequent sessions in order to see results. Alternatively, you can combine the two, however, it is best to seek professional advice if doing so.

For an at-home option, the Qure Q-Rejuvalight Pro Facewear offers a three-minute treatment that can be performed regularly. This device connects to the Qure Skincare App that can be downloaded to tailor treatment. Dr Naomi also offers an at-home LED mask, which only requires three–five treatments per week.

Is the treatment safe?

Due to RLT being non-invasive and performed in relatively short intervals, it is considered safe for most people. The treatment does not emit ultraviolet (UV) light so there is no increased risk of skin cancer.

It is always best to speak to your General Practitioner before trying any treatment. Always read the label and follow the directions for use.
